It’s the end of the month and time for another segment of my monthly Wrap Up. This is where I open up about running my business and let you have a sneak peak into the dirty details of a Romance author’s career. I’m covering which projects I’m working on, any set backs or opportunities that come my way, the truth about submissions, and more.
I’m a firm believer in accountability, which is why last October, I’ve started detailing my goals for the next month and wrapping them up at the end. This helps me focus throughout the entire month, especially when I’m answering to my readership and not just myself. Shall we give it a try? For August, my goals included:
- Finish the draft of my next romantic suspense, Rules in Blackmail
And for September, I’m setting out to:
- Complete revisions on the first book in my For Love and Country series, Falling for Her Traitor (more about this below)
- Finish the draft of my next romantic suspense
My Primary Project: Writing Category Romance
Yeah, boy! I’m still drafting, which I love. My current work in progress is keeping me on pins and needles and I’m seriously falling in love with it more every day. Hoping I’ll come in just under my deadline to have the draft finished by the 31st. I still have five days. I’m almost finished with this draft right now, having spent most of August concentrating on this book, and I can’t wait to start revisions.
That sounds weird, right? I usually put off revisions as long as possible, but I’m actually excited to see how much better this book can get. And I’m really looking forward to sharing this first installment in the Blackhawk Security series with you.
As of right now, there are six books planned and I have the first three plotted. I know who will star in the last three, but the plot just hasn’t come to me yet on those. More on that soon, hopefully.
For now, I’ll leave you with a little clue as to what this current WIP is about…
First rule in blackmail…don’t fall in love.
Right now, I’m not revising anything. But I do have plans to devote the month of September to a book I’ve been working on for the past two years now. That’s right, you know which book this is.
Falling for Her Traitor.
I have a love-hate relationship with this book. Love – because the plot makes my heart race and the characters are intelligent, fiery, and so in love. Hate – because no matter how many editors I’ve gotten this book in front of, it just doesn’t meet the cut. Some for good reasons. Some for silly reasons. Which is fine…ish. Everyone has their personal preferences and the publishing industry is very subjective.
But I think I finally found this book and the two other books in the series a home. I have to run through the manuscript a couple more times to ensure the romance is on point, maybe send it out for another round of critique, but I’m going not going to give up.
This manuscript is “the book of my heart” or at least it was when I wrote it and I feel it deserves a real shot and readers would love it as much as I do. So I’ll give it one more shot. If nothing happens, it’ll go in the pile of manuscripts under my bed until maybe an editor asks me, “What else do you have?”
Nope. I still haven’t gotten The Breakup Artist or Die For Me up and running since one of my publishers and I decided to call it quits. But I’m thinking one of them will become a freebie for my newsletter subscribers this fall.
To be honest, I don’t love these books and that’s why I’ve had a hard time putting them back up for sale. They are my lowest grossing books with the harshest reviews and I don’t have the heart or the time to give them makeovers. Maybe some day. Just not right now.
His Seductive Target is releasing October 4, 2016! I can’t believe how close that is (just over a month) and if you’re a newsletter subscriber, you probably already have your advanced reader copy. If not, you can sign up here, just make sure you read the rules please.
I’m also sending every reader who preorders this upcoming release a thank you video for your support. All you have to do is email me with your confirmation number and you can expect a heart-felt, awkward thank you from me in your inbox.
And if you missed it, I’ve uploaded the first three chapters of His Seductive Target to Wattpad. I’ve never done anything like this before, but I’m hoping to find a larger audience for this title and ensure I’m saying thank you to my readers properly.
My Secondary Project: Continuing Education
This month, I took part in Elizabeth Heiter’s FBI class through Romance Writers of America Kiss of Death chapter. I LOVE this author and her Lawmen series and since I’ve written my own series centered around a task force within the FBI. The class ends at the end of the month, but this class has everything I need to know about the Bureau. So when it comes to those revisions next month, I’m prepared.
And if you’re a fan of Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic, you might have seen she runs a podcast for creatives and I can’t believe I didn’t know it sooner. I finally subscribed to this station and am loving every word that comes out of Elizabeth’s mouth. She has a way of making the world right again when all I want to do is drown in self-pity and hate the words the page. Can’t recommend it enough.
My TBR Project
I have had the hardest time getting into books this month. Probably because I devote everything I have right now into the current work in progress, so I’m leaving this section blank.
That’s it for this month’s Wrap Up! I thoroughly enjoy giving you a sneak peak into the life a Romance author. If there’s something you’d like to see in these wrap ups or if you have any questions, please let me know. I love talking with you, especially about upcoming books, my writing process, and what I’m reading. Until next month!
