I’ve recently joined the Entangled Publishing team and have set out to read everything in the Covet (paranormal romance) imprint in which I’ll be debuting in, in February 2015. And the first book I picked up on their awesome $0.99 sale a couple months ago was Luck of the Dragon by Susannah Scott.
Well, today I have the pleasure of interviewing my new publishing sister Susannah and her dragons.
NS; Thanks so much for stopping by, Susannah!
SS: Thank you so much for having me! I had to go check out the blurb for your upcoming Covet book, Her Fallen Protector. Immortals and a repo expert heroine–so cool. And my gosh you are a lauded and talented author. So pleased to call you a Covet Sistah!
NS: Tell us about your journey with Luck of the Dragon and how you ended up publishing with Entangled.
SS: I’ve always been an artistic soul. When my youngest turned two I started writing, seriously. After I finished my first book, I was shocked to find that I wasn’t very good. I think my first contest results were 56%. Over the course of the next two years, I took a ton of classes to improve my skill. At the end of an intensive editing class with Liz Pelletier (Entangled Publishing), she gently “passed” on acquiring my then fantasy romance. I asked her what she would like in the dragon variety? She said, “something fun, and contemporary, and sexy.” Viola, Luck of the Dragon began to form in my head. I submitted the completed manuscript to her within a few months.
NS: Most paranormal romance revolves around vampires, werewolves, angels and demons. Why did you pick dragons to write about?
SS: I love dragons. I love that they can fly, and I love that they are over-the-top powerful! The added human-dragon shifter element is wonderful because the beast is in constant conflict with the rational human. I loved getting to know my shape-shifting dragons by seeing how they deal with their competing impulses. But, mostly it is the flying, and fire, and power!
NS: I love Luciana de Luca’s character, especially the fact that she’s a PhD and a very intelligent woman. Where did your inspiration for her come from?
SS: I’m so thrilled that came through for you as a reader and author, thank you for saying so! I love smart women in real life, so it is natural for me to write about them. Plus smart women are so fun to throw for a plot curve. They are so used to having all the answers that their bewilderment really goes deep. This happens to Lucy when she first encounters the dragons. She just can’t process the visual information she was seeing. I had some good laughs on her, I’ll admit. 🙂 I wanted Lucy to be brilliant and sassy and conflicted. I wanted her to really struggle mentally and with her moral compass over stealing from Alec to save her ne’er do well twin brother.
I love Luciana de Luca’s character, especially the fact that she’s a PhD and a very intelligent woman.
NS: Now, I hear there’s a second book in the series coming out this year, which I’m dying to get my hands on now that I’ve read the first. Can you tell us anything about it?
SS: Oh yes! Stop Dragon My Heart Around is Leo and Tee’s story. You will remember Leo from Luck of the Dragon as being Alec’s right-hand man. Tee is Leo’s best high-roller casino hostess and a Native American (Pauite). It’s a friends to lovers tale with lots of great questions of what it means to belong: to a partner, to a tribe, to oneself. It should be out in April. I can’t wait either. Tee is a really unique heroine and a perfect match for Leo.
NS: What’s your favorite element of Sin City and why choose Las Vegas as your setting for this series?
SS: I just love Las Vegas—for about 3 days—after that I am worn out. But if I had to define what makes it so sexy and the perfect backdrop, it’s the foil of the condensed opulence against the harsh dessert. It gives the place a feel of being out-of-time, that reality is truly pushed away to the edge of the green-watered lawns, so that anything—even dragons—seem possible.
Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today, Susannah! Can’t wait for more to come from you.
