It’s the end of the month and time for another segment of my monthly Wrap Up. This is where I open up about running my business and let you have a sneak peak into the dirty details of a Romance author’s career. I’m covering which projects I’m working on, any set backs or opportunities that come my way, the truth about submissions, and more.
I’m a firm believer in accountability, which is why last October, I’ve started detailing my goals for the next month and wrapping them up at the end. This helps me focus throughout the entire month, especially when I’m answering to my readership and not just myself. Shall we give it a try? For July, my goals included:
- Devote more time to actually writing with a set schedule
- Finish the first draft of the first book in my new romantic suspense series, tentatively titled Rules in Blackmail
- Finish the draft of my free paranormal novella for my newsletter subscribers
And for August, I’m setting out to:
- Finish the draft of my next romantic suspense, Rules in Blackmail
My Primary Project: Writing Category Romance
Okay, well, the past two months I couldn’t even think about opening my laptop to work on…anything. No blog posts. No Twitter or Facebook updates, and definitely no drafting. However, the writing bug hit me last week and I’ve been writing like a mad woman. I’ve taken my laptop with me everywhere. To pick up my husband from work, to the park when I go with my son, even to the splash pad (which was not a good idea), and I actually took it to a wedding where I had three hours to kill between the ceremony and the reception.
I can’t tell you how amazing it feels to be back in my office chair knocking out words. Some days it’s only a couple hundred, but most of the time I can average about 2,000 words a day right now. My son is still home for the summer so until he goes back, I have to make him a priority (something about being a mother first…), but words are being written.
And it’s on a book I love. Originally I started this draft in May, but I hated every word I wrote (you can read more about that in my post When Goals Get in the Way of Art). I was trying too hard. I had a specific idea for where I wanted this book to be contracted, but wasn’t keeping my mind on the only thing that mattered: the art. That’s all I can control though, isn’t it? Putting the words down on paper and getting the story out of my head.
Well, after deleting that original draft (and taking a couple months off from work), I’ve finally found my rhythm. The story is flowing much easier, I’m excited to get back to it, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.
I actually did get a few revisions in this month. With my upcoming release, His Seductive Target, coming out in October, I had quite a few line and copy edits to get in order before finalizing the galleys. Nothing major, just final steps to get this book to you guys typo free!
As for any other revisions, I have the second book in my counterterrorism series, Resurrecting Her Special Agent, to read through and revise. This is the book I wrote during NaNoWriMo last year, but with this writing bug keeping a hold on me right now, nothing else is distracting me right now. With the first book still on submission, I’m not really making this book a priority right now, but once I’m finish with the first draft of this current romantic suspense, I’ll dive back in.
The first book in my counterterrorism series, Falling for Her Traitor, is still on submission with a couple houses. Yep, they take 12 weeks each, so there isn’t a whole lot of movement with this book right now.
And I don’t really have anything else in the works right now other than writing new books. Kind of nice 🙂
My Secondary Project: Continuing Education
Nothing going on in this category for July. However, I did accidentally register for a July class for the RWA Kiss of Death rather than the August class, so I am enjoying an inside look at the US prison system, but not devotedly.
My TBR Project
Not a huge dent in my TBR pile, mainly because I just keep adding to it, but I did get some reading done this month!
- Watch Me by Cynthia Eden
- Lover Reborn by JR Ward
Not the best record, but not the worst either! For August, I’m hoping to tackle a few different romantic suspense authors I’ve purchase over the last month.
That’s it for this month’s Wrap Up! I thoroughly enjoy giving you a sneak peak into the life a Romance author. If there’s something you’d like to see in these wrap ups or if you have any questions, please let me know. I love talking with my readers, especially about upcoming books, my writing process, and what I’m reading.
