It’s the end of the month and time for another segment of my monthly Wrap Up. This is where I open up about running my business and let you have a sneak peak into the dirty details of a Romance author’s career. I’m covering which projects I’m working on, any set backs or opportunities that come my way, the truth about submissions, and more.
I’m a firm believer in accountability, which is why last October, I’ve started detailing my goals for the next month and wrapping them up at the end. This helps me focus throughout the entire month, especially when I’m answering to my readership and not just myself. Shall we give it a try? For September, my goals included:
- Finishing the draft of my next romantic suspense, Rules in Blackmail
And for October, I’m setting out to:
- Revise and submit my latest project and proposal to my targeted publisher
MY PRIMARY PROJECT: WRITING CATEGORY ROMANCE
I did it! I finally finished the first installment of my brand new romantic suspense the Blackhawk Security series. The first book in the series, Rules in Blackmail, was so much fun to write. I’ve said this before about another book, but I feel like this manuscript really was the book of my heart. At least, a part of it. It’s fast-paced, romantic, and thrilling all at the same time.
This was also one of the hardest drafts for me to write. I seriously started working on this book in July and was going great until I hit another round of burnout. I seem to be doing that a lot this year. I’d get started on the book again and spiral down into watching Netflix all day instead of writing. I’d finally had enough this month when I just hammered out the last half of the book and here we are. A finished draft!
It’s nowhere near ready for submission. I’m currently reading through the manuscript once again then I’ll send it onto a couple beta readers in October before I submit. It’s been a lot of fun to write this book. Every time I sat down to get my word count in for the day, I felt like I was on ecstasy. And I’m so glad this story is out of my head because the second in the series is already taking over.
On top of getting the project I just finished into shape for submission, I’m also taking on another revision project in October. However, I think I’ve finally figured out what to do with Desolation>Falling for Her Traitor>New title. This book…man…I’ve been working on it for two years now. It’s been through so many rewrites (4 right now), but I finally figured out how to get it to work. And it’s going to take a lot of work and a hell of a lot more patience to get it where I want it.
But really, I’ve decided that I want to write for a specific publisher and I’m going to do everything in my power to make it happen. I need to build my brand. I need to hack away at this goal. And writing one book a year and leaving projects sitting around in a drawer are not the way to do it. My son is in school now, so I have the time. I just need to take this Romance gig seriously again.
So the FBI series I’ve been working on for two years will now be incorporated into the current series I’m working on. There will be six proposed books in this new series. Wish me luck!
His Seductive Target [Afterlife, #2] is releasing October 4, 2016! It’s almost here! Do you have your copy yet?
MY SECONDARY PROJECT: CONTINUING EDUCATION
This month, I thrived on continuing education. And there were so many good deals.
- Kiss of Death Intelligence Community
- Navid Moazzez List Building Course
- Savvy Authors Conference
- RWA University Let’s Talk About Sex by Alisha Rai
- Dare to Blog by Sarah Morgan
MY TBR PROJECT
I made some progress in this month’s TBR project! Not much, but enough to keep me going through my first draft of the new romantic suspense:
- Flash Fire by Dana Marton
- On the Prowl by Cynthia Eden
That’s it for this month’s Wrap Up! I thoroughly enjoy giving you a sneak peak into the life a Romance author. If there’s something you’d like to see in these wrap ups or if you have any questions, please let me know. I love talking with you, especially about upcoming books, my writing process, and what I’m reading. Until next month!
